Do All Children Go to Heaven? Scripture indicates that God judges a child differently than He judges an adult. Anyone who is old enough to know right from wrong is said to have reached the age of accountability, meaning they will have to answer to God for their actions. Those who are too young to understand the consequences of their choices are considered innocent.

Answer. The Bible doesn’t explicitly answer the question of whether children who die before they are born again go to heaven. However, enough indirect information can be pieced together from Scripture to provide a satisfactory answer, which relates to infants as well as those with mental handicaps and others.

Some have said that David simply meant he would join his son in the grave. But that is no comfort! He was not just shrugging off the fact that his child had died, ready to move on. He was encouraged enough to want to worship, clean up, and eat! David knew that he would be in heaven forever after death (Ps 23:6).

The Bible answers this question very clearly: No. Only Jesus Christ has gone to heaven. Human beings don’t go to heaven or hell at death. But that doesn’t mean all hope is lost when someone dies. The Bible reveals the encouraging hope that the dead will be resurrected at a future time—after Jesus Christ returns.

Both. All believers in Jesus who die before his Second Coming, will first be with Him in heaven, and later live with Him on the new earth, when heaven and earth will have become one. When Jesus was dying on the cross, He told the criminal who believed in Him: “today you will be with Me in Paradise” (Luke 23:43).
