Cronus overthrew his father and ate all of his children (except Zeus) to stop it. Zeus didn't actually eat his children, but he was told by the prophecy his second child with Metis will overthrow him, so he ate Metis to stop it before it happens. While he succeeded, she was already pregnant and Zeus ended up giving birth to their first (and only) child Athena.

This sets the stage for, in, the innards of Zeus for the development. It has been said that Metis’ hammering out Athena's armour causes Zeus' headache, so the residence has been made by what had transpired to Metis making it to the head of Zeus and not trapped to solely the stomach (like Kronos had his kids who were helpless).

An oracle of Gaea then prophesied that Metis' first child would be a girl and that her second child would be a boy that would overthrow Zeus, similarly to what had happened to his father and grandfather. If the Theogony theory of Athena’s birth is correct, however, it is likely that Athena is the first born of Zeus’ children. This is because she is mothered by Zeus’ first wife, Metis. It could also help explain why many consider Athena to be Zeus’ favorite of his offspring.

Eventually, Zeus and Rhea got Kronos to vomit up the other kids (and the stone!), and Zeus led his siblings in a revolt to overthrow Kronos and the Titans. When they won, Zeus, Hades, and Poseidon divvied up the world amongst themselves: The underworld went to Hades, Poseidon scored the seas and oceans, and Zeus got the skies, putting him above all other gods — literally.

Why did Zeus swallowed Athena? Zeus swallowed his consort METIS [mee’tis] (“wisdom”), after he had made her pregnant, because he feared that she would bear a son who would overthrow him. And so ATHENA [a-thee’na], or ATHENE (MINERVA), was born from the holy head of Zeus. Hephaestus, with his ax, may have facilitated the birth.

As ruler of the Greek pantheon, Zeus feared losing his royal privileges to his unborn child, so he ate Metis to prevent her from birthing his children. According to some myths, Metis herself told Zeus of this prophecy, but others state that the gods Uranus and Gaia warned Zeus of his future child’s strength.
