Although not rare, there were very few kids on the Titanic. In total, there were about 100 children aboard the Titanic. But we also have to consider that fact that in the early 1900's, you were a kid until you were about 13. By the time you were 13 you could already be looking for your spouse and soon be having kids.

It’s a bit surprising that more children didn’t survive but this could possibly be attributed to the mis-representation of what age is considered as the cut off for adults - i.e. if in the 1900’s someone 15-17 were considered adults, they would not have been “saved” under the “women and children first” idea and would be made to fend for themselves.

The women on board the ship were generally a bit younger than the men, the average age of the males was 30.6 while the average age of the females was 28.7.

The titanic2 data frame has no missing data and includes records for the crew, but age is dichotomized at adult vs. child. These data were obtained from Robert Dawson, Saint Mary's University, E-mail. The variables are pclass, age, sex, survived.
