Southwest: Must Travel with Child's Birth Certificate. Southwest is a notable exception: you must travel with a copy of your child's birth certificate. You'll also need a medical release from your child's doctor if traveling with an infant under 14 days old.

Unless your child already has a passport that can be used to prove their birth date, you may need to bring a copy of their birth certificate. While some airlines are more lenient than others, it is always best to come prepared.

Children of all ages usually require a valid passport when flying to another country. While children traveling by land or sea can travel to most destinations with a birth certificate, we strongly recommend that you apply for a passport anyway. A passport provides official proof of citizenship and helps avoid delays when passing over borders.

In general, besides your passport, you should bring written consent from the child’s biological parent (s) along with the child’s birth certificate. Many countries require that the consent document be witnessed and notarized.
