It's estimated that at least 1 in 7 children in the US has experienced child abuse and/or neglect in the past year. Neglect is the most common form of child abuse, followed by physical abuse, sexual abuse, and psychological abuse.

The FFY 2019 data translate to a rate of 2.5 children per 100,000 children in the general population and an average of more than 5 children dying every day from abuse or neglect. NCANDS defines “child fatality” as the death of a child caused by an injury resulting from abuse or neglect or where abuse or neglect was a contributing factor.

Child abuse reports involved 7.9 million children. 91.4% of victims are maltreated by one or both parents. Only 3.4 million children received prevention & post-response services. 142,056 children received foster care services. 491,710 victims (74.9%) are neglected. 115,100 victims (17.5%) are physically abused.

We don't know exactly how many children in the UK experience child abuse. Child abuse is usually hidden from view. Adults in the child’s life may not recognise the signs that they are being abused and the child may be too young, too scared or too ashamed to tell anyone what is happening to them.

The rates of child abuse are increasing every year, and the numbers are frightening. In 2015-2016 there were 355,935 notifications of child abuse. This was an 8.1% increase from 2014-2015. Of these cases, 45% were claims of emotional abuse, 25% were cases of neglect, 18% physical abuse and 12% sexual abuse. These are the number of reported cases.
