For the pain is severe you can give Plain Buffered Aspirin, but this can only be given providing the dog does not have any bleeding issues and is not on any other pain medication. The Aspirin dosage is 5 mgs per pound of body weight every 12 hours for maximum a total of two days.

Motrin is an effective NSAID for reducing mild to severe aches and pains, but it should not be given to your dog. Ask any vet and they’ll tell you Motrin is not safe for animals. It is not. Motrin is ibuprofen which can become quite toxic to a dog's system in just small doses. For arthritic and joint pains, regular non-coated aspirin (not Advil, Tylenol or other anti-inflammatory OTC) can be given at a dose of 5 mg per pound of body weight, no more than once every 12 hours, and no more than 3 times total.

So, the short answer is no, ibuprofen should not be used as pain relief for dogs, unless you have been specifically directed to do so by your veterinarian provider. If you have been directed to give your dog ibuprofen by your vet, make sure the medication is accompanied with very careful instructions and strict dosages to adhere to, and follow those instructions and dosages religiously.

Novox (typically prescribed by a veterinarian to treat inflammation, arthritis-related pain, and post-operative pain), Tramadol, or Gabapentin (usually recommended by a veterinarian for older dogs that are dealing with neuropathic pain, chronic pain, or seizures) are three common medications used in pain management for dogs.

Can You Give a Dog Ibuprofen? No. Ibuprofen is considered toxic for dogs and should never be used as a canine painkiller. Never give your dog Advil, Motrin, Midol or other drugs containing ibuprofen. Even small amounts can be life-threatening.

A one-size-fits-all program won’t work. Experts say there is a five-fold variation in pain tolerance for the same surgical procedure in humans. So if a condition would be painful in a person, you should assume it’s also painful for your puppy. Not all pain is severe or sudden or requires pain drugs.
