Up to five distinct profiles can be created as part of a single HBO Max account, making it theoretically possible to share with four other friends or family members. Profiles can also be tailored to kids or adults, with parental controls available for the former.

Creating separate profiles will allow you to restrict content for kids, but they’re also useful for keeping track of who is watching what and where they last left off. To get started, open your HBO Max app or navigate any browser to HBOMax.com. On the “Who Is Watching” screen, you can add an adult or child account.

HBO doesn’t say how many people can watch at once, but you may see a message about too many simultaneous streams “for security reasons.” Like other services, HBO insists that you shouldn’t share your account with anyone “outside your household.” But what’s a household? As long as you don't share your account with millions of TV viewers, HBO probably won't frown if you share it with, say, the kids away at college or your cash-strapped favorite uncle.

The $11.99 membership grants the streaming of up to four videos on four separate devices at the same time. The latter has been referred to as a “family plan,” but there is no official requirement that users sharing the account be part of the same blood line.
