In a case of giving a child up for adoption as a teen, the mother and the teenager must give their consent. In most states, a teenager is granted the opportunity by law to say whether or not they consent to the adoption. This may or may not affect the way you are thinking about giving your teenager up for adoption.

Can you give up your child, at any age, for adoption for any given reason (e.g. you just don't want him/her anymore)? You can, and it would help if you had another family for the child to go to. Many states have baby-safe laws, where mothers can leave their babies at hospitals, fire stations, and police stations.

Most of them have been in foster care for a considerable length of time; many have faced multiple moves and great losses. Until fairly recently, teens in foster care were rarely considered for adoption. Thankfully, that has now changed. It is now recognized that it is never too late for someone to join a family.

Your child will now have another mother too, and only you can decide if that’s the right option for your child. When you choose adoption, if your circumstances require a permanent solution, you aren’t giving up; you’re giving everything you possibly can to your child at this time in your life.

Give your consent to the adoption. If you are pregnant, you will typically not give consent until the child has been safely delivered. Most states have a waiting period, to give you time to recover from the birth and not be under the influence of pain medication. The waiting period can be as short as 12 hours or up to 15 days.

You can select your child’s adoptive family to give your child the life you want for them. You can maintain contact with your child and their adoptive family through open or semi-open adoption. You‘ll have complete control over your adoption journey from start to finish. The adoption process is completely free for prospective birth mothers.

The short answer is yes, you always have options when it comes to finding the right fit for you and your child. You can place your child for adoption after you’ve given birth and you can also make an adoption plan at the last minute, even while you are in labor.
