The amount of tax-free gifts is capped each year.

So if you and your spouse have two grandchildren, both of you can gift $14,000 to each child for a total amount in tax-free gifts of $56,000. And remember, these are tax-free gifts above and beyond the $5.43 million exemption limit.

The gift tax is imposed by the IRS if you transfer money or property to another person without receiving at least equal value in return. This could apply to parents giving money to their children, the gifting of property such as a house or a car, or any other transfer. There is also a lifetime exclusion of $11.58 million.

You would need to split it among your children, if you’re giving money to more than one. If you haven't used last year’s annual allowance, you can carry this forward. So you could give £6,000 in a year to your child and avoid IHT problems – or up to £12,000 if both parents want to give money and haven’t already used their allowances.

The U.S. tax code makes it fairly easy to give your children money, stocks or other investments or a piece of the family business. For instance, if your son's start-up requires seed money to beat the competition to market and other investors are hard to come by, giving him his entire inheritance early might make a lot of sense.

There’s a limit of £100 on the amount of interest a child can earn on the money you gift them if they are under 18. This limit is designed to prevent parents from using their child’s tax-free allowance to avoid income tax on their personal income when they file a tax return.
